See what a barista earns and what hiring one really costs, then post your job in one place.

The short answer

A barista's average salary in the UAE is AED 2,725 to AED 3,062 a month, as the salary sites GulfTalent, Naukrigulf and Indeed publish it. The cost to the employer is higher than the pay: a work permit fee between AED 250 and AED 3,450 depending on the company's category, mandatory health insurance, and end of service of 21 days' basic wage for each of the first five years.1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10

What a barista costs the employer in a year

What the employer pays on top of pay to hire a barista
ItemAmount
Issuing or renewing the work permitAmountBetween AED 250 and AED 3,450 depending on the company's category8
Health insuranceAmountMandatory in every emirate; the Ministry's basic package is AED 320 a year in Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain9
End of service gratuityAmount21 days' basic wage for each of the first five years, after at least one year of continuous service10

The work permit fee depends on your company's category: the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation sorts companies into three categories by how well they comply with the labour law, and a company with violations is placed in the last one.

Any allowance the contract sets, such as housing or transport, comes on top. To add it all into one number at the pay you offer, use the employee cost calculator, and to work out the gratuity when a contract ends, use the end of service calculator.

Health insurance

Since 1 January 2025 health insurance for private sector employees is mandatory in every emirate, and the employer pays for it when the residence is issued or renewed. In Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation offers a basic package at AED 320 a year, in which the insured person pays part of the treatment:

  • Inpatient care: 20% of the bill, up to AED 500 a visit and AED 1,000 a year; above that the insurer pays in full.
  • Outpatient care: 25%, up to AED 100 a visit, and nothing for a follow up visit within seven days of the first appointment.

In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, ask an insurer for the price of the policy before you work out the cost.

End of service gratuity, in days

The UAE Government portal counts the gratuity in days of basic wage, without allowances, after at least one year of continuous service:

  • 21 days for each of the first five years.
  • 30 days for each year after the first five.
  • The total is capped at two years' wage.

Example: a barista who worked three full years is owed 63 days' basic wage, and one who worked seven years is owed 165 days: 105 for the first five years and 60 for the two after. We do not turn days into dirhams here, because the official page does not say how a monthly wage becomes a daily wage.

How to hire a barista: seven steps

  1. Set the duties, the hours and the pay you offer, and check the lowest typical pay in the table.
  2. Post the job with a clear title and a description of the duties, and state the pay if you can.
  3. Interview the candidates and ask each one to make two drinks in front of you; it shows the skill faster than a CV.
  4. Send the job offer and agree the start date.
  5. Apply for the work permit with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation; the fee depends on your company's category.
  6. Buy the health insurance before the residence is issued, then complete the medical test, the Emirates ID and the residence.
  7. Pay the salary on time every month and keep a record of hours and leave.
